LEAZES COTTAGE / 2 bedrooms / sleeps 4
Kitchen/Diner, bathroom and lounge to the ground floor. 2 bedrooms and w.c as well as ‘Jack and Jill’ style shower room to the first floor. A double bed to the master bedroom with 2 single beds to the second bedroom. The first recordings of the house appeared in the 1871 Census report. The Cottage is described as The Lodge, i.e. to Leazes House, the mansion down the hill, then inhabited by the Henderson family owners of ‘Durham Carpets’; The lodge was occupied by their coachman, Henry Booles and his wife Mary, together with one Martha Bland, a visitor, ‘scholar’ aged 14. The present downstairs bathroom was possibly a stable, with a second stable beyond it, doubtless their then followed a harness room and fodder store, these have been replaced by the existing buildings when the mansion down the hill became Saint Marys High School. After the High School moved out the college of Saint Hild’s moved in, later to amalgamate with the college of Saint Bede. The Cottage/Lodge would seem to have been pleasantly refurbished over the years, for use by residential staff of the school and then the college.
